The Librarian: Quest for the Spear

Over the weekend a movie came on TV that I thought was going to be really stupid. We were working on building the closet so I figured I would just leave it on as background noise. I am glad I didn’t change the channel!

The movie was The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. The title is what made me figure it would be stupid. But remember, never judge a book by it’s cover, or in this case a movie by it’s title.

I had never heard of the movie because it was “made-for-TV” which is usually a sign of crap to me.

Noah Wylie (ER) stars as Flynn Carsen, your typical book smart type who is chosen as the new Librarian to head the New York Public Library, and to take over the duties of protects “the artifacts” kept in the building. These artifacts include Excalibur, The Holy Grail, The Golden Fleece, Little Boy, etc.

Someone steals part of the Spear of Destiny and must hunt down the thieves and return the spear to the library.

This movie could easily have been an Indiana Jones rip-off, but it really isn’t. It has a good storyline and moves along nicely. The characters are all well built and the casting was perfection.

The movie also stars Sonya Wagler (C.S.I.:NY) as a “Special Agent of the NY Public Library System”. It is her job to protect Flynn.

Bob Newhart (a bunch of stuff) and Jane Curtain (a bunch of stuff) star as heads. Both are perfect in their roles. The casting couldn’t have been better.

I give this movie a straight up “A”. It’s fun, quirky, visually appealing, funny, and totally harmless. Remember, normally I like mafia and war movies so this getting an A from me is really something.

I just found out today that Librarian 2 is in preproduction and is featuring the same cast. I am definitely going to keep my eyes open for it!
