Traci Lords - Underneath It All

I finally finished reading Underneath It All by Traci Lords .

If you will remember I reviewed Jenna Jameson’s biography back in January. I liked the book itself, but the actress herself left me cold.
Traci’s biography is a completely different animal. While Jenna’s book tended to glorify the porn industry, Traci almost tells us the real story.
Traci’s story begins when she is a small child. Her parent’s separation resulted in her and her sisters being bounced around from parent to parent and from house to house. Watching her father beat her mother in the street caused her to fear her father for many years.
She tells how she was raped by an older “boyfriend” when she was just 10 years old.
Just reading this part of the story explains how she later became so fucked up.
Guided by her stepfather, Traci entered what she thought was a modeling career at age 15. Of course we all know now that the “modeling” turned into full blown porn.
The stories she tells of how she made it through some of the film shoots is chilling at best. She was completely addicted to drugs and alcohol.
You can’t put all of the blame on the filmmakers though because Traci did have ID showing she was 18.
When government investigators found out that she was underaged the FBI actually broke down the doors in her apartment to arrest her. She was 18.
Over the next several years Traci was hounded by publicity seeking prosecutors all over the country who wanted her to testify in child pornography cases. In the end her mother took over for her to testify in her place.

Wanting to become a legitimate actress, Traci worked very hard over the next several years trying to break into the mainstream. Several times she was chosen after auditions only to be dumped when the producers learned of her background.
Her first big break came from John Waters when he cast her in the movie ”Cry Baby”. She received good reviews and was the offered further roles.
She has appeared in several movies and television shows always to good reviews.
She even received the Best Actress Award at the US Comedy Arts Festival for her role in the 2004 film ”Chump Change”. She has come a long way!

Traci had another dream. She wanted to sing (what actress doesn’t?)
In 1995 she released the cd titled ”1000 Fires” which earned her the nickname “Queen of the Techno Underground”.
She also learned how to be a pretty good DJ herself.

I have to say that by the end of this book I really felt like Traci was a decent girl. She has given everything she has and fought countless battles to get where she is today.

Definitely give this book a shot. It is well worth the read.
