A Short History Of Pornography *NSFW*
Pornography has been around in one form or another for pretty much the whole entirety of man. Drawn and painted pictures, written words, photographs, and finally film.
In the 1650’s three pornographic novels were published; La Puttana Errante (The Wayward Prostitute), L'Ecole des Filles (Girls School), and Satya. These books were translated into many different languages and are considered the models for modern day porn.
Here is a short excerpt from the novel “The Lustful Turk” first published in 1828:
"I quickly felt his finger again introducing the head of that terrible engine I had before felt, and which now felt like a pillar of ivory entering me… My petitions, supplications and tears were of no use. I was on the altar, and, butcherlike, he was determined to complete the sacrifice; indeed, my cries seemed only to excite him to the finishing of my ruin, and sucking my lips and breasts with fury, he unrelentingly rooted up all obstacles my virginity offered, tearing and cutting me to pieces, until the whole of his terrible shaft was buried within me. I could bear the dreadful torment no longer, but uttering a piercing shriek sunk insensible in the arms of my cruel ravisher."
The Lustful Turk is the story of Emily Barlow and her servant Eliza Gibbs. They are kidnapped by an Algerian pirate and are brutally raped repeatedly, but as all good porn goes, they end up falling in love with their captor.
As you can see what was considered pornography at the time would now be considered a trashy romance novel.
With the advent of photography pornography flourished. Here is a selection of photographs that show how little has actually changed:
In 1896 French actress Louise Willy stripped completely naked in the film Les Époux vont au lit. According to IMDB this is the first movie with sexual content ever made.
Stag films which were popular from before World War II through the early 1960’s, were usually shorter movies that were shown in brothels, back alley theaters, stag parties, etc. They were usually silent and were filmed mainly in black and white. Very few contained cumshots. How boring! But at the time I am sure they were thought of as quite hot.
In 1972 two films were released that are still considered to be two of the best adult movies ever made:
“Deep Throat”, starring Linda Lovelace is the story of a woman who can only get off by giving deep throat blow jobs because her clitoris is located in her throat. How ridiculous!
Linda Lovelace is considered to be the first woman to become world famous simply for being in a pornographic movie. What I find amazing is that even though she is so well known her entire career consisted of only 5 hours of film. Linda performed in several stag films such as “The Foot”, “The Fist”, a watersports video titled “Piss Orgy” and most astonishingly “Dog Fucker” which yes, is bestiality. In 1980 Linda released the book “Ordeal” in which she stated that she was beaten and coerced into a life of pornography and prostitution. Sadly Linda was killed in a car accident in 2002.
“Behind The Green Door”, starring Marilyn Chambers, tells the tale of a short order cook who convinces two customers to tell him the story of the green door that they have hinted about in the past. As the story goes, a woman is kidnapped and is brought to a mysterious upscale club where she is ravished on stage for the enjoyment of the patrons.
Even though this film was made on a very small budget it is considered to be very well made.
Marilyn Chambers really was once the cover model for boxes of Ivory Snow detergent. She was dropped by the company when she started in porn. As far as I know “Behind the Green Door” was the first porn movie she starred in. Prior to that, she appeared in “The Owl and the Pussycat” with Barbara Streisand and George Segal. The most recent film I can find is “Marilyn Chambers Bedtime Stories” which was released in 2003.
Today pornography, in all of its forms, makes A LOT of money! With the advent of the internet porn has become more accessible to the general public. Depending on which source you believe, the adult film industry earns either as much or almost as much as mainstream movies do. That’s a whole lot of cash!
